Also, the summer and winter months tend to be vacation months and as such, there are less individuals that make appointments to donate blood. When they are on summer and winter breaks we will see a decline in the amount of units collected overall. High schools and colleges provide about 25-30% of our total collections in our Northern California Region. The summer and winter months are more challenging to collect blood. We anticipate this shortage to push into and possibly through the end of August. As a result, our national inventory is at a critically low level.
What this means is that we are shipping blood products to local hospitals quicker than we are able to collect them. On Wednesday, July 5th, 2017, the American Red Cross made an announcement that we are on an appeal for blood products.
